Description

Moon jars carry their philosophy in form alone — quiet, deep, self-contained — a window onto the white porcelain aesthetics of the Joseon dynasty. This example is attributed to Ahn Dong-oh (安東五, 1919–1989), art name Hosan, who came to pottery through the appraisal and restoration of antique ceramics in the late 1950s, founded a ceramics research institute in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do around 1962, and from 1965 devoted himself to reviving traditional forms — the period to which this jar belongs.

The attribution rests on the mark. A large jar by Ahn recorded at Dai Ichi Arts, complete with its signed wooden box, carries the same blue hand-brushed “安” on its base, identical to the mark on this jar (reference: https://www.daiichiarts.com/artworks/categories/12/4903-ahn-dong-oh-an-togo-large-jar/). Ahn more commonly signed “安瓷” in hand script, or used a double-ring seal reading “安東五印”; the single “安” mark is known on only a small number of pieces and, on the evidence of his marking practice, belongs to his early work — and to his finer work.

Ahn made moon jars a signature form, and also worked in blue-and-white, copper red, relief and openwork. His works are held by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Korea and the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities in Stockholm; the British Museum holds a peony-scroll vase he donated himself, made around 1986.

Dimensions: 24 cm high × 32 cm in diameter.
